When WWE returns to Saudi Arabia on Friday, June 7 for their next event in Jeddah, the rumored matches set to take place include Undertaker vs Elias, Bobby Lashley vs Goldberg and Brock Lesnar vs Seth Rollins. As it stands, though, the event is less than one month away and hasn’t yet been named.
According to a new report from Wrestlevotes on Twitter, though, the event could be named WWE Sands of Time. While this isn’t an official name that WWE has confirmed, it would make sense.
WWE’s Saudi Arabia Controversy
WWE has had a few shows in Saudi Arabia since signing on for a lucrative multi-year deal. While this hasn’t come without controversy stemming from various issues like women being barred from appearing at events in the past, the killing of Jamal Khashoggi which occurred just one month before WWE’s Crown Jewel event and other issues, WWE has persisted with this relationship nonetheless.
Because of these controversies, stars like John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Sami Zayn have missed shows in Saudi Arabia in the past. Bryan refused to face AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at Crown Jewel while Cena refused to participate in the Greatest Royal Rumble following the Khashoggi murder. For Zayn, the issue stemmed from the fact that he is of Syrian descent and, for his safety, he was left off the card entirely.
While the shows in Saudi Arabia have been successful, it’s still questionable that WWE is continuing to grow this relationship while many other companies in the United States have cut ties entirely. It doesn’t seem like WWE is interesting in severing ties at this point, though.
With the event quickly approaching, WWE will probably release an official name (perhaps confirming WWE Sands of Time) in the coming weeks, potentially after the Money in the Bank pay-per-view.
