Triple H recently spoke with Sports Illustrated and when asked for his take on the ratings run AEW is on, when put up against NXT, the leader of the black and gold brand had lots to say.
For those that have been paying attention to ratings, it was noted that AEW Dynamite has a pretty good stranglehold on NXT in recent weeks, but Triple H refuses to panic. His comments to SI were that this ratings thing is not a sprint, but a marathon.
“I’m a believer in the long-term game,” he said. He explained:
“You create the right product, and over time, people will find it. I think back to Monday nights years ago, and it looks different now, but there were periods of time when WWE was putting on much better shows and the content was much better, but we were still getting beat. We were not winning ‘the war,’ but we stayed true to who we were.
While WCW had a ton of issues backstage, Triple H is right in that WCW’s product grew stale while WWE’s got continually better each week. Eventually, after 83 weeks, WWE took over the ratings and never looked back. But, is Triple H suggesting the same thing will happen with AEW?
“If it’s a flash and it’s exciting at first but you can’t maintain it, then it loses that pizzazz,” he said. He added, “It’s long-term duration, for me, that’s how you win. I’ve been saying it since the beginning—I’m not concerned about those numbers week-to-week. It’s about trying to put out the best show you can every week.”
Triple H Hints Big Things Are Coming
Along with the expectation that Charlotte will make a jump to NXT now that she’s the Women’s Champion, Triple H noted that there’s also a big debut coming. NXT teased the debut of former Impact Wrestling star Killer Kross last Wednesday. His introduction to the brand is imminent and Triple H suggests that could be a big deal.
“The first time you see him, you know right away that he’s something special,” Triple H said of Kross. “It’s been a long path for him to get where he is. He is a unique talent that combines what he does in the ring with his charisma and his intelligence. I’m excited for him to be here.”
