In news that probably shouldn’t surprise anyone, Shawn Spears — known to WWE fans as The Perfect 10 Tye Dillinger — is coming to AEW and will be part of the Casino Battle Royale at Double or Nothing next Sunday.
Spears was long-rumored to be making his way to AEW. Good friends with Cody Rhodes, it was merely a matter of time before his joining the company could be announced. His non-compete with WWE ends 48 hours before Double or Nothing is scheduled to take place. It is not clear if he’s going to sign a contract with the promotion or will just be appearing but, he did say,
“AEW is history-making. When the chance presented itself to be a part of something so groundbreaking, I wasn’t going to wait around any longer.”
Spears left WWE when his most recent contract expired. Not happy with how he was being used, he informed the company he wanted to move on, even after they offered to dramatically increase his pay not to leave. Then known as Dillinger, he didn’t even want to see the offer and respected Triple H for not pushing the issue.
Spears is now betting on himself that he will be able to make his decision to leave WWE a good one. Joining AEW for their first-ever pay-per-view will be seen as a good start.
Why He’s Coming to AEW
While speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Spears said he believes in the company.
“I’m coming to AEW because I believe in what they are doing,” the now 38-year-old who is looking at a brand new start said. “I believe in providing an alternative for fans, and I really believe that the audience has wanted an alternative for quite some time. This is now the platform to give people exactly what they want, and I am really looking forward to proving myself in AEW.”
