Bully Ray and David Agreca of Busted Open Radio took a look at Ronda Rousey’s recent comments on the Steve-O podcast and then the subsequent reaction from fans, WWE Superstars, Hall of Famers and everyone else who either supported Rousey or called her to task. The only thing no one seems to know right now is whether she was working or shooting when she made her comments.
There are recent rumors that suggest Rousey was set to make a return to WWE. Talks of new contract negotiations with WWE suggested she might be talking a new three-year deal with the company, one that that we see her work far fewer shows over each calendar year. Then, of course, Rousey made it seem like those contract talks were non-existent when she told Steve-O:
“Well, if I ever do come back it will never be at a full-time capacity ever again. I think like for stints like chunks of time you know. I’m very much like an obsessive person or I like to obsess over something for a certain time and then like kind of go take some time to obsess about something else. But no I’m never gonna be full time again over 200 days a year on the road like that ever again because it’s just it was I needed to do it in order to learn and get like immersed into it and really understand what was going on but it’s just not the lifestyle for me.”
Then, during the podcast, she said noted that she really didn’t feel like leaving her family, especially for the “f*cking ungrateful fans”. She asked:
“What am I doing it for if I’m not being able to spend my time and energy on my family but instead spending my time and my energy on a bunch of f*cking ungrateful fans that don’t even appreciate me?”
Her comments caught everyone off guard and there were responses from current talents like Lana and Alexa Bliss, the most noted which came from Nia Jax who said she wanted to knock Rousey out for real if she ever returned to WWE. There were also responses from past performers like Mark Henry who thought Rousey had a point in that she wasn’t treated very well while she was in WWE by the fans.
Rousey Didn’t Back Down
After the talk turned into loud screams, Rousey took to Twitter again and doubled down on her comments. She noted on an Instagram post this past Saturday:
“Anyone who is outraged by me calling pro wrestling “fake fights for fun” has never been in a REAL fight. While you all are tip toeing around bruising some pro wrestlers’ huge soft egos – no one is thinking about the REAL fighters you’re insulting when pretending pro wrestling is somehow on the same level of realism. Yes, I understand, wrestling 300 days a year for years on end is incredibly tough on the body and a difficult profession – but you know what would happen if you got in 300 REAL fights in a year? You would be dead.”
She posted another social media video of her beating up a Hulk Hogan Wrestling Buddy doll saying, “Goodnight #ROWDYONES and jabronie marks without a life that don’t know it a work when you work a work and work yourself into a shoot, marks”
It became a question of what is Rousey doing? Is she working everyone? Is she really pissed off? If she finding a way to backtrack her comments and save face with a locker room full of WWE Superstars she claims to love?
If Rousey Is Working Everyone
On the most recent episode of Busted Open, Bully Ray and David Agreca talk this whole Rousey situation and suggest that if this is a work (an angle meant to create heat or favor among the WWE audience) Rousey is doing an incredible job. She’s stirring up so much talk that if and when she does return, everyone will want to see what happens next.
Agreca noted, there’s no way she “won’t get booed out of the building.” It’s the perfect set-up for her to be a heel in WWE and perhaps work a program with Becky Lynch to get her over as a babyface again.
Daniel Cormier and Ariel Helwani got into a conversation about it, Helwani suggesting Rousey has X-Pac heat for turning on the fans while Cormier called her an absolute genius, working on a level we can’t comprehend because someone told her to come back as a heel and she’s hitting it out of the park.
But, What if Rousey Is Shooting Here?
Everything changes though if Cormier wrong and this isn’t a work.
If Rousey actually means what she says, she’s got a problem if she ever wants to come back to WWE. When she returns, a huge chunk of the fan base she upset with her comments and a locker room full of Superstars she claims to respect just heard her disrespect the business. As Bully Ray notes, “You can’t love the girls and say the word ‘Fake’ in the same sentence”, because even though they know their business is pre-determined, it undermines everything they’ve spent years trying to make look and feel real.
If Rousey actually hated the fact that fans turned on her when they wanted to cheer for Becky Lynch, she’s not going to get many favorable responses to coming back, especially if WWE has their head up their butts and tries to bring her back as a babyface.
What do you think? Is Rousey working everyone? Or, did mean what she says and has no desire to come back to a business that turned on her?
