The breaking news that was coming from NXT General Manager William Regal came today and it’s definitely a newsworthy item.
Regal announced on today’s edition of The Bump that a new tournament to determine an Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion will take place. The reason NXT needs and interim champion and for the tournament is because Current champion Jordan Devlin is in the United Kingdom and travel back to defend his title.
Here is WWE’s statement:
On Wednesday morning’s edition of WWE’s The Bump, NXT General Manager William Regal revealed that a tournament to crown an interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion will be held in the coming weeks since reigning titleholder Jordan Devlin is in the U.K. and currently unable to defend his title due to current circumstances.
Details on the tournament, including the entrants and the full bracket, will be revealed in the coming days on WWE’s Digital and Social platforms. There is also speculation that a decision will be made regarding the NXT Tag Team Titles as Matt Riddle’s partner Pete Dunne is also stuck in the UK and unable to defend.
Devlin took to Twitter after the announcement and said this was a disrespectful decision by WWE officials.
“First things first, absolutely shocking and disrespectful decision by @WWE management. Secondly, you can crown a fraud champion and give him a little replica of my title, but everyone around the world knows who the REAL NXT Cruiserweight Champion still is,” Devlin wrote.
