During a post-Double or Nothing media avail, Chris Jericho told reporters that he knows why he’s in AEW, how it’s the perfect fit for him, how they benefit from what he brings and why the product is a great alternative for wrestling fans.
Jericho had just come off of a hard-fought battle with Kenny Omega in the main event of AEW’s first-ever pay-per-view. Winning the match makes him a No. 1 contender, along with Adam “Hangman” Page for AEW’s new championship and his being in the main event is more inline with his expectations than people might think.
While some would suggest Jericho is in AEW because he simply wants to help grow an alternative to WWE, they’re only partly right in that assumption. The other half of the equation is that Jericho believes that at 48, he’s still having top-quality matches, is the main event star and he helps AEW as much, if not more, than the company helps him.
While the promotion now employs names like Jon Moxley (Dean Ambrose), Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks and is working with veterans like Dustin Rhodes, Bret Hart, DDP, Dean Malenko and others, Jericho’s involvement brings eyeballs and fans who want to see what the company is all about. Saying he did the same thing for Japan when he appeared in NJPW, his being a part of AEW helps bring exposure to someone like Omega. Jericho said his battles with Omega will help people realize Omega a 15-year overnight sensation.
What Else Jericho Said
Jericho also told the media he won’t be on the show unless its in a big role, he’s still got what it takes to be a huge star in the company and he’s extremely happy to be working with creative minds that understand the importance of letting the performers shine. Working with a company that is run by talented executives in their 30’s is a game changer.
