Cain Velasquez Released by WWE
After accomplishing very little with WWE, on Tuesday, former UFC fighter Cain Velasquez was released from his WWE contract.
The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer was first to report the news and outlets like Pro Wrestling Sheet confirmed the reports noting that this was like a cost-cutting move by WWE as Velasquez was barely used, brought in to battle Brock Lesnar and working through an injury as a very green professional wrestler. It simply didn’t make sense to keep paying him.
Velasquez made his first appearance when WWE debuted its first SmackDown show on the FOX network and went on to battle Lesnar at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. While the initial buzz was huge, he lost that match in only a few seconds.
Velasquez was quickly shelved after criticism that he didn’t look believable and after rumors he was dealing with an injury. The idea was that WWE would give him more time, but as the COVID-19 virus struck and layoffs became necessary to keep financial flexibility, removing his hefty contract made sense.
If news comes out as to why or if Velasquez comments on the reports, we’ll be sure to update the story here.
