Shawn Spears, former WWE Superstar Tye Dillinger, caught up with Bill Apter at last week’s Legends of the Ring convention. During that interview, he discussed his debut at AEW and how it all came to be.
“Well, it’s common knowledge that I’m good friends with an Executive Vice President [Cody Rhodes], and I’d heard the rumblings like everyone else across the planet.
I’d heard about the beginning of something special, so when the opportunity presented itself to be part of it, it just so happened to fall in line with my timeline of the whole 90-day [non-compete clause]. That worked out perfectly in terms of timing, so once one thing ended, another door opened and I dove through that door without hesitation. It turned out to be the best decision I’ve made in recent memory.”
For Spears, the stars truly did align given the timing of his injury, to his requested release and finally Double or Nothing which saw his AEW debut in the Casino Battle Royale.
Spears’ debut wasn’t the only topic of discussion. Apter would make sure to ask Spears about his AEW colleagues, specifically, as it pertains to the Main Event of All Out between Chris Jericho and Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship and who he believes will win. In his answer, Spears would give Hangman a glowing recommendation.
“Nobody loves Chris Jericho more than Chris Jericho. He’s going to be gunning for it more than anybody else because he feels like he still has something to prove, even though the guy’s resume speaks for itself. I’m pulling for Hangman. I think Hangman has a chance to make himself a worldwide, global star in one match. That’s the match to do it in.”
If Hangman can beat Jericho to become the inaugural AEW World Heavyweight Champion, he certainly will take a huge step forward towards becoming a global star.
