Johnny Gargano recently participated in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit in which he answered a variety of questions both inside the wrestling world and otherwise.

In the AMA, he spoke about his first time meeting WWE, if he was hesitant to sign with WWE, who he wants to win the Main Event of WrestleMania 35 and more.

Here are some highlights:

On If He Was Hesitant to Sign With WWE

“No, I wasn’t hesitant. I went through such a process getting a contract here, and my goal was to always be here. I wanted to follow in guys like Daniel Bryan’s footsteps where they accomplished everything they could on the indies and they felt like they were ready for the next step in their career. You grow up and dream of competing at WrestleMania, you grow up dreaming of being a WWE Superstar, and I’m lucky to live my dream every single day now.”

In a time where many WWE superstars have publicly aired their grievances, it’s nice to see Gargano appreciating what he has in WWE. Few superstars over the last few years have worked as hard as Gargano to push himself from the mid-card to a top-star. Gargano certainly carries himself as a star and he has a bright future in WWE.

On the First Time He Met Vince McMahon:

“I actually met him for the first time when I was Cedrick Von Haussen in 2007. I was 19 years old. They had to take me into his office to show him the Elf costume I was wearing, and it was almost out of a movie because he was sitting in a swivel chair with his back turned to me, and he slowly turned around when I entered the room, and he had a newspaper held to his face, and he slowly brought the newspaper down and said “you look great.” After the match, he said “good job, kid”, and I felt like I could retire right then.”

McMahon may be abrasive and hard to deal with at times but there’s no way around the fact that he’s earned his spot at the top of the wrestling industry. When wrestlers get any sort of compliment from him, it definitely has to be a good feeling.

On His TakeOver Match With Aleister Black

“Luckily enough we had a deep, detailed story going into it that we could play off of … with a lot of different story points. And I’ve always been a fan of adding some short of Shakespeare and some sort of drama, and creating a movie more so than just an ordinary wrestling match. I feel like in this day and age, we do so much athletic, high-flying maneuvers, and it’s nice to add more depth to it. P.S. Why am I so violent?”

Black and Gargano both have a chance to be impact players on the main roster. Their match at TakeOver was nothing short of amazing and the story leading up to it added an extra flavor to the result. With Gargano fighting with himself internally, it made the build-up that much better.

On a Main Event Call-Up

“I get asked the question a lot of when I’m going up to the main roster, and I got a taste of that with Raw and SmackDown, and obviously you get into wrestling, your dream is to wrestle at WrestleMania and one day I hope to make that happen. But for me, I feel like in my heart, NXT is my main roster.

It’s everything I ever wanted out of professional wrestling and my goal with NXT is to make people forget the question “When are you going up to the main roster?” NXT is a viable brand on its own. We sold out Barclays Center again.

I put our locker room up against any locker room in the world, and tomorrow night at TakeOver, we’re gonna set the bar for WrestleMania weekend.”

Right now, Gargano is set to feature in the biggest match at NXT TakeOver New York. While he may not be on the main card on the biggest weekend of the year this time around, he’ll almost definitely find himself on the main card in the near future. For now, he’s clearly focused on putting on a hell of a show against Adam Cole for the NXT Championship.

On His Favorite Triple H and/or Matt Bloom Story

“The craziest thing for me, since I’m a huge wrestling nerd at heart, I remember we were going through an area where security was going to hold me back, and Triple H had to show security guards how to hold people back properly. At one point Shawn Michaels got involved too.

So at one point, Triple H is holding my waist, and HBK is holding my arms. I couldn’t fathom in my wildest dreams where D-Generation X would be pretending [to] be security guards with me at the center.

Another great story is after Triple H tore his bicep, I Photoshopped a special “get well soon” card with me and Tommaso’s faces on the card and texted it to him.”

Gargano and Ciampa have a history of backstage antics together and were one of the most popular tag teams in NXT for a reason.

On Who He Wants to Win WrestleMania Main Event

“I remember at my tryout, she was there at the Performance Center working out, and I never met her before but I was a big fan of her work on the indies, especially Shimmer. And she came up to me and said she was a big fan of my work and was happy to see me there. I wasn’t even sure she knew who I was, and she had no reason to say that, but she felt the need to come up to me, and that says a lot about the type of person she is.

To see her get her finally get her opportunity in the WrestleMania main event, it’s about time. I feel like we’ve had a similar path and this whole weekend is about people finally getting their moment and their due, and I can’t wait to see The Man get hers.”

Gargano is in agreement with the vast majority of wrestling fans who seem to be behind Lynch as the favorite to become the Undisputed Women’s Champion at WrestleMania.
